Leadership Spotlight: SIM Albany President, Jack Barsky
1. Please provide an overview of the SIM Albany chapter.
At the moment we have 30 paid members. Our goal is to grow the chapter to 50 members in 2015. read more…
2. What are your goals for your term as the President of the SIM Albany chapter?
The primary goal is to create a self-sustaining chapter that will be a valuable member of the greater SIM family
3. What are the hottest trends in the IT industry?
“Hot” is perhaps not the right word, but cyber security is becoming more and more a focal point for IT organizations with an impact on all other areas of IT.
4. What challenges is your chapter currently facing?
So far we have not been successful recruiting members from the public sector and academia. Given the significant presence of both in the Greater Capital Region this is a priority for 2015.
5. What is the one piece of advice you will give the next President of the SIM New York chapter?
Maintaining a healthy chapter requires hard work. The next President should consider adding a “Membership Retention” chair to the Board.
6. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to start a SIM chapter.
How about three?
1. Start with a core of about half a dozen like-minded people.
2. Lean heavily on SIM headquarters for advice and guidance. They have been of great assistance to us.
3. Consider a conference (such as our SIMposium) to jump start the chapter.

SIM’s Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) – Giving Back to Those Who Give So Much
Giving back … at home, at work, and in the community…has long been woven into the very fabric of the RLF. The curriculum includes emphasis on giving back as an essential characteristic of authentic leadership. Throughout RLF’s 23 year history, forums have organized fundraising projects and events at the local level. Many of those have been integrated into SIMposium.
In recent years, RLF give-back efforts have included support for our military veterans. At SIMposium the last two years, all forums have created fundraising activities to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. The efforts by RLF participants and generosity of SIMposium attendees have been remarkable, as have the fundraising results.
RLF has also worked with veterans groups to make a limited number of tuition-free seats available to selected veterans the past few years. read more…
Join SIM Women on Wednesday, February 25th at 3pm ET for a webinar: Looking Into the Future Beyond IT
Big data, the internet of things, mobile social, and cloud are all hot topics in the media --- but what does it all mean? When we step away from our devices we realize that these dramatic changes are rocking the foundation of our lives.
SIM Women invites you to join them on a webinar Wednesday, February 25th at 3PM ET. SIM Women, a national program of SIM, is meant to be inclusive not divisive; both men and women are welcome to participate. We focus on bringing thought leaders together to discuss the challenges facing today’s marketplace.
Looking Into the Future Beyond IT will examine the other side of our technological advances – what is happening in the rest of the world beyond IT?
This discussion will explore the changes that are and will be creating both challenges and new opportunities for organizations:
What happens as cash becomes more expensive?
How will changes in regulations and enforcement around the world affect our businesses?
Why will changing demographics impact the workforce and market opportunities?
What are the impacts of the recession and corresponding limited investments on our workforce and organizations?
What does increased utilization of independent agents, consultants, and contractors mean in terms of managing your environment and new opportunities?
Why are industries moving towards specialization and how does that affect an organization’s need to change rapidly?
What do increasing speed and reduced barriers to entry for new competitors mean for your organization?
The webinar will be facilitated by Leona Thomas, a business transformation and enablement executive who focuses on shaping businesses for the future. With over 20 years successfully delivering industry leading business transformation initiatives and turnarounds, Leona brings a unique perspective on identifying new opportunities and impacts for organizations - and how to take advantage of changing environments.
Register here for the webinar --- instructions for attending the webinar will be sent to you the day before the event.
The 2015 SIM IT Trends Study is Coming Soon!
The 36th annual SIM IT Trends Study is coming soon. Are you and your chapter ready? Since 1980, SIM’s IT Trends Study has reported on the state of the information technology profession and detailed key issues facing IT executives. Last year’s study achieved a record 1,002 participants and produced the most comprehensive report to date (and it’s a free download to SIM members at http://www.simnet.org/?ITTrendsStudy. We hope to build on this success by reaching even more members this year and diving deeper into the issues you identified in 2014.
Now you know … the average SIM-member CIO spends 46.3% of their time interacting with the business, 45.3% with IT, and the rest working alone.
Participants in this year’s study will receive a personalized benchmark report comparing their responses to the rest prior to the presentation of the final report at SIMposium 2015 in Charlotte. We also plan to significantly increase the monetary value of prizes for winners of the Chapter Challenge, and have prize drawing for participants too. Stay tuned for more prize details!
The survey opens around April 1st. Only SIM members can participate. Don’t be left out! Make sure the email in you member profile on http://simnet.org is up to date. Be on the lookout for more communications about how you and your chapter members can participate to make this the best Trends Study ever.

The Advisory Council (TAC) Alliance
The Advisory Council International is a not-for-profit legal entity built on top of the TAC core expertise and administration. TACI consists of alumni of The Research Board, who were formerly global CIOs of major companies. Currently there are around 25 such Executive Advisors in TACI. They provide strategic IT advice to Boards of Directors, to company CIOs and senior IT executives, and to many of the major IT service providers.
Many Chapters use TACI's services, and several Chapters have requested that we develop a relationship with TACI so that members can utilize their services at a discount.
I'm pleased to let you know that we have an agreement for 2015 that gives you access to TACI at a discounted rate. TACI will assist in Chapter development through providing speakers at events as well as reaching out to its extensive network of large cap CIOs. They will also be offering a member-in-transition assistance service providing short-term employment opportunities as well as assistance in job search. If a member uses TACI's services, the net profits from the engagement will be sent back to the member's Chapter.

Need A New Year's Resolution? Join Mark Zuckerberg In Reading More Books!
How often do you have the chance to weave together such contemporary hot topics as “killer apps” and “social media” with stodgy old notions like “New Year’s resolutions” and “love” and “reading books” into ideas that sound just like the core principles of SIM’s RLF program – courtesy of none other than Mark Zuckerberg (well, with timely suggestions from RLF’s own June Drewry and Joanne Jackowiec)?!
The January 3 Business Insider included an article about Zuckerberg’s New Year’s resolutions, including one to “read one book every other week for the entire year, with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories, and technologies.” Those are books he is talking about – not online wikisummaries or RSS feeds, but actual books! He further explains that he “finds reading books very intellectually fulfilling” and “books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today.” Think about that for a minute – coming from one of the titans of media today.
